Mountaintop / Iacocca Hall
Planning phase. An independent plan; nothing is funded or built yet. What this means
Why here
Mountaintop sits about 180 m above Goodman. The Spine bus serves this stop from day one; a gondola could make the climb in about 6 minutes per section if studies support it.
The stop would be a Spine bus platform, with a gondola angle station as an option. Both would need Lehigh's agreement. Mountaintop Discovery Gardens is a separate, student-initiated idea with its own status; this plan does not show or assume its design.
Program ideas Proposed · planning phase
- Heated waiting room and snow-melt at the platform edge
- Gondola angle station (option)
- Near Mountaintop Discovery Gardens, a separate student-initiated garden idea (not sponsored or endorsed by Lehigh University; it includes no transit or museum parts)
- Above-ground or earth-sheltered geology learning pavilion at the station, with rock cores and a rock garden of local stone (no mined underground museum); separate from the garden
- Trail links to Lehigh's Forest Park
Which extras are worth it here, maybe later, or not worth it is rated further down this page.
What exists today Existing today
- No LANTA trips within 400 m in 2022 timetable data; Lehigh shuttles serve the campus.
- Lehigh's Forest Park opened its first public trail on 22 April 2026.
Measured station area
- Elevation
- 275 m (USGS 3DEP)
- 10-minute walk
- 33 ha · 12 buildings · 57 places
Walk areas are slope-adjusted 10-minute walksheds on the Overture pedestrian network; building and place counts are intensity proxies, not population or jobs.
Future train access One Connect ride to a rail-ready stop
From Mountaintop / Iacocca Hall, about 9 minutes on Bethlehem Connect to the rail-ready stop at Farrington Square.
No passenger trains run in Bethlehem today, and no regional rail route or station has been chosen. Rail-ready stops are where this plan would keep space free. How this was measured.
Measured links
- Connect Spine — electric BRT: Goodman / Stabler Arena → Mountaintop / Iacocca Hall · 4.03 km · ~7.8 min · max 11.2%
- Connect Spine — electric BRT: Mountaintop / Iacocca Hall → Lehigh University Center · 3.14 km · ~6.2 min · max 13.2%
Still unknown
- Lehigh's agreement on siting and stewardship
- Winter wind and ice exposure
- Bus-bridge plan for gondola wind or lightning holds
Amenities here: worth it or not Screening judgment
Exposed hilltop campus stop at 275.4 m (about 180 m above Goodman, with 11-13% approaches), where winter protection, a winter service plan (for example, serving it from Farrington via the measured Mountain Dr N route if Mountain Dr S closes) and the proposed geology pavilion drive the program, while the tiny walkshed (12 buildings, 0 LANTA trips) rules out most extras.
Worth it here
- Heated, enclosed waiting room: Colder and windier 180 m above Goodman; the plan proposes one. Needs a winter service plan and a Lehigh agreement (to confirm).
- Public art and heritage or geology display: Documented geology (Great Unconformity, sauconite) suits the proposed pavilion; its exact site and Lehigh's agreement are to confirm. Loaned specimens only.
- Snow-melt at the platform edge: At 275.4 m with 11-13% approaches, ice would block the accessible route; the plan proposes snow-melt at the platform edge.
- Public Wi-Fi and phone charging: Low cost inside the proposed heated waiting room, where riders shelter from the cold.
Maybe later here
- Solar panels on the station canopy: Canopy and pavilion-roof solar are proposed, but solar on Lehigh land can't simply credit a City or LANTA account (to confirm).
- Battery energy storage: The energy plan ties it to gondola life-safety, so it waits for the gondola or pavilion; a small UPS covers the room.
- Water bottle filler: An outdoor filler would freeze at 275 m; add one inside the heated room only if a water line reaches it.
- Elevators (in pairs), only at level changes: Only if a raised gondola angle station is built; the bus platform uses ramps.
- Ground-source heat pumps (enclosed spaces only): Gneiss is favorable and a heated room is planned, but borehole land on campus isn't agreed; air-source heat pumps are the fallback.
- Energy display with real solar and charging data: Fits in the pavilion once real solar and heat-pump meters exist and a host maintains it. Never placeholder data.
Not worth it here
- Public restrooms: Low use (57 places, 0 trips). Point riders to Iacocca Hall restrooms by agreement (distance, access and hours to confirm).
- Staffed customer service: 0 LANTA trips at a through stop, so the help point and real-time screens are enough.
- Secure bike lockers or bike hub, and bike-share docks: Only 12 buildings in the walkshed and 11-13% climbs, so carry bikes on bus racks.
- Park-and-ride: Hilltop Lehigh land with no highway interchange, and Lehigh hasn't proposed one.
- Drop-off and paratransit loading zone: Tiny walkshed with no hub, hospital or event role; occasional pick-ups and AccessLU can use campus curbs (to confirm).
- Terminal bus charger (overhead pantograph): Through stop with ~20 s dwells; the energy plan shows no charger here, and buses regenerate on the descents.
- Food or coffee kiosk (partner-run): Low footfall: 57 places and 0 LANTA trips.
- Small shop space: Low footfall and no existing ground floor facing the platform.
- Community lounge or study nook: No host partner and a tiny walkshed, and the proposed geology pavilion already covers the learning role.
- Equipment-lending lockers or package lockers: No recreation venue within ~250 m in the files, and 12 buildings is far below the 1,000 for package lockers.
- Event queuing and bus staging space: No venue of 5,000+ capacity within a 10-minute walk.
- Driver restroom and break room: A through stop with no layover.
- Regional and intercity bus bays: No regional or intercity carrier serves the campus hilltop.
- Rail-ready space reservation: Not on the rail-ready list; a tunnel station under Iacocca Hall would be about 196 m deep.
- Hospital and 24/7 shift-worker features: No 24/7 employer with about 2,000 staff within 400 m.
