Lehigh University Center / Asa Packer Campus

Planning phase. An independent plan; nothing is funded or built yet. What this means

Campus core · gondola terminal option
Phase 1 · conditional target 2029Typology: CampusOne-page place sheet

Why here

The heart of the Asa Packer campus. Kept as its own stop 0.86 km up the hill from Farrington Square (≈40 m rise, max ~10% grade).

Program ideas Proposed · planning phase

  • Covered waiting and a study nook
  • Real-time screens
  • No duplicate food retail — the Clayton University Center already has dining
  • Gondola terminal option nearby (site TBD)

Which extras are worth it here, maybe later, or not worth it is rated further down this page.

What exists today Existing today

  • About 16 LANTA weekday trips within 400 m (2022 timetable data).
  • Lehigh shuttles serve the campus.

Measured station area

Elevation
123 m (USGS 3DEP)
10-minute walk
102 ha · 620 buildings · 256 places

Walk areas are slope-adjusted 10-minute walksheds on the Overture pedestrian network; building and place counts are intensity proxies, not population or jobs.

Future train access Short walk to a rail-ready stop

About an 11-minute walk (0.8 km) to the rail-ready stop at Farrington Square.

No passenger trains run in Bethlehem today, and no regional rail route or station has been chosen. Rail-ready stops are where this plan would keep space free. How this was measured.

Measured links

  • Connect Spine — electric BRT: Mountaintop / Iacocca Hall → Lehigh University Center · 3.14 km · ~6.2 min · max 13.2%
  • Connect Spine — electric BRT: Lehigh University Center → Farrington Square · 0.86 km · ~2.3 min · max 10.1%

Still unknown

  • Accessible route on the ~10% slope to Farrington
  • Gondola terminal site

Amenities here: worth it or not Screening judgment

Hillside campus through stop (122.6 m, 256 places, 16 LANTA trips) beside the Clayton University Center, which should cover most needs, so it adds little beyond the standard kit.

Worth it here

None

Maybe later here

  • Heated, enclosed waiting room: Below the ~200 m exposure test with ~5-minute waits; an enclosed room only inside a gondola terminal, if one is built nearby.
  • Secure bike lockers or bike hub, and bike-share docks: Not a terminus, junction or trail stop, so racks first. E-bike share docks only once an operator commits (none confirmed).
  • Solar panels on the station canopy: A canopy is proposed, but the stop is on Lehigh campus roads, and Lehigh-land solar can't simply credit City or LANTA accounts.
  • Community lounge or study nook: The plan proposes a study nook, but it needs an enclosed space and Lehigh as host, without duplicating Clayton UC space.
  • Elevators (in pairs), only at level changes: Not for the curbside stop (ramps). Only with a gondola terminal near UC: redundant elevators and a lift link to Farrington.
  • Ground-source heat pumps (enclosed spaces only): Only inside a gondola terminal near UC, if built, after a geology and karst check; the bus stop itself is open-air.
  • Public art and heritage or geology display: Hardyston quartzite from local quarries appears in Lehigh buildings, so a small sourced panel is possible with Lehigh's input (to confirm).
  • Snow-melt at the platform edge: The 0.86 km link down to Farrington reaches about 10%, above the ~8% test; measure the walking approach before heating anything.

Not worth it here

  • Public restrooms: The Clayton University Center is next door (public access and hours to confirm), and only 16 LANTA trips run nearby.
  • Staffed customer service: Only 16 LANTA trips and no intercity service, so the help point and real-time screens are enough.
  • Park-and-ride: Walkable campus core (620 buildings, 256 places) on Lehigh land, where parking would push out campus uses.
  • Drop-off and paratransit loading zone: The curb is needed for the platform; use legal loading on a side street within ~50 m. Lehigh's AccessLU already exists.
  • Terminal bus charger (overhead pantograph): Buses stop only ~25 s, and the energy plan puts no charger at stop 5.
  • Battery energy storage: Open-air through stop; a small UPS covers lights, screens and the help point.
  • Food or coffee kiosk (partner-run): The Clayton University Center already has dining, and 256 places and 16 trips fail the 500/200 test.
  • Small shop space: Below the 500/200 test, and shops would duplicate the Clayton University Center.
  • Equipment-lending lockers or package lockers: Tight campus platform; Grace Hall and Taylor Gym are 321 m away with no partner, and 620 buildings is under 1,000.
  • Water bottle filler: Open-air through stop with short waits and no trail or event crowds; a new freeze-proof water line costs more than it gives.
  • Event queuing and bus staging space: No documented 5,000+ venue within a 10-minute walk; big crowds are planned at GOOD, POLK and FARR.
  • Driver restroom and break room: Buses only pass through; layovers would be at the proposed PNR and NBETH termini.
  • Regional and intercity bus bays: No regional or intercity carrier stops here; they use the BTC downtown and the bays proposed at PNR.
  • Rail-ready space reservation: Off the rail-ready corridor; Farrington, the nearest rail-ready stop, is an 834 m walk or 2.3-minute ride.
  • Hospital and 24/7 shift-worker features: No 24/7 employer with 2,000+ staff within 400 m; St. Luke's would be reached from Farrington (branch option A).
  • Energy display with real solar and charging data: No live solar or charger meters here, and the open-air screen is needed for arrivals.
  • Public Wi-Fi and phone charging: Open-air through stop with ~5-minute waits; real-time screens already meet the information need.

Every stop also gets the essentials. Ratings are the author's screening judgment from measured data, not a design or a commitment.
