Mountaintop geology museum idea

Planning phase. An independent plan; nothing is funded or built yet. What this means

The proposed Mountaintop / Iacocca Hall stop could double as the entrance to a small geology pavilion, showing real drill cores from under South Mountain, but only if a real study ever drills them.
Long-term ideaNothing has been drilled or found, and no site has been chosen.

A rock-core garden at the stop

What it would show

Real drill cores from the route's soil and rock tests (geotechnical borings), if any are drilled, each labeled with:
  • Boring ID and location
  • Depth interval
  • Date drilled
  • Rock or soil type, as the project geologist logged it

Until there are cores

A possible stand-in: documented specimens from a legitimate collection, labeled with their true origin, for example from Lehigh University's Earth & Environmental Sciences department, if it is willing. No one has been asked.

Conditions

  • Cores exist only if a real feasibility study drills test borings.
  • Cores belong to whoever commissions the study. Showing them needs that owner's written agreement.
  • Labels copy the official boring logs. No estimated depths or rock types.
  • Every core is screened for contamination before public display. Former industrial land and fill can carry it.
  • A covered or indoor display, because many rock types weather outdoors.

Land and agreements

The Mountaintop campus is Lehigh University land: a pavilion there would need Lehigh's agreement, and none has been asked. This page claims no site, partner or approval.

Separate projects

Separate from Mountaintop Discovery Gardens, a student-initiated garden idea with its own status; neither depends on the other. Also separate from the Dig & Discover gallery idea at Third Street, which shares its rule: we show only what is actually found.

It fits the plan's philosophy: it would reuse material that would otherwise sit in storage or be discarded, it is simple to understand, and it could be free to visit if a reliable funding source pays for it.
